About these courses

These courses are suitable for students currently studying in Junior College 1 and 2.

We have three courses available for these levels, General Paper 1 and General Paper 2. Courses are exams orientated and teach skills to support students’ work at school.

The General Paper classes support A-Level candidates who are hoping to enter university or higher education.

For General Paper 1 and General Paper 2, we cover the text types "Academic Essay Writing" and "Summary and Application Question".

ALL OUR GENERAL PAPER COURSES ENABLE STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR BEST THROUGH:

  • improving overall confidence in their English
  • building strategies to improve their exam results
  • developing effective techniques for tackling comprehension texts

Learning outcomes

General paper 1

Study a wide range of challenging issues demanded by the General Paper, from art and music to government and international relations.

Learning outcomes:

  • read and understand texts, infer vocabulary, give specific answers to questions and identify key points in the text
  • differentiate between different types of information and analyse texts
  • synthesise information from texts
  • find relevant information from texts, evaluate and summarise facts and form arguments and opinions based on a variety of reading texts
  • plan, organise and write with purpose
  • construct logical arguments and express opinions
  • improve writing and organisation and express mature ideas
  • use grammar and vocabulary relevant to the GP syllabus more confidently
  • identify common errors and communicate clearly and effectively.

General paper 2

Work towards A-level success by covering all the skills and strategies required by the exam.

Learning outcomes:

  • employ a variety of reading strategies when completing a reading comprehension
  • infer from what is written by skimming and scanning challenging texts
  • deal with complex vocabulary and structures
  • recognise referents, draw on Singapore social and cultural experience and broaden their outlook through discussion of global perspectives
  • write a good summary and develop clear thinking and expression
  • evaluate, summarise and synthesise facts, arguments and opinions in challenging reading texts
  • plan, organise, construct and proof-read essays, avoid verbosity, repetition and redundancy and understand the need for factual accuracy
  • construct arguments and express ideas well and develop clear thinking and expression
  • give clear opinions and logical arguments and use categorical and less categorical language
  • understand cause and effect and demonstrate maturity of thought.
