If you’re looking for an enrichment activity for your child this school holiday, the British Council has excellent study camps that balance fun and games with language learning. With English as Singapore’s main language and the world’s lingua franca, a mastery of the English language is a skill that cannot be understated. Aimed at primary and secondary school students, this winter camp promises to boost your child’s grammar, vocabulary and oral confidence.
“At the British Council, we believe students learn a new language best when they are having fun and using English in a context that is meaningful for them,” explains Study Camp Coordinator, Kevin Dunkerly. “Our students are encouraged and empowered to discover new language for themselves, an approach which dramatically increases student confidence and ensures that new grammar and vocabulary is used during every lesson.”
Of course, since it’s the holidays, keeping things fun is key. Kids will enjoy a mix of games, projects and communicative activities to get the grey matter going. But keeping your child thoroughly entertained isn’t the only reason why these camps are so successful with young English-learners around the world. Here’s what they have to offer.
Top-notch teaching and facilities
When you enrol, a free pre-course assessment ensures each child is placed in the right group. Classrooms are comfortable and modern, equipped with interactive whiteboards, internet and laptop access, so you know you’re getting quality. All teachers hold a minimum Cambridge University-awarded CELTA certification and have substantial teaching experience. Your child will benefit from internationally-recognized teaching methods designed to challenge, motivate and entertain.
These English study camps are all about fostering learner autonomy. Pair or group work as well as whole-class interactive exercises are preferred over lectures to empower your child to become an active participant in his or her learning. This way, your child will build their confidence and speaking skills.
Resources are carefully chosen to enrich students’ knowledge of the English language whilst also learning about other subjects. Studying these materials alongside children from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds creates a wonderful opportunity for intercultural mixing while working on grammar and vocabulary.
A safety first approach
Keeping kids safe is a top priority and rigorous checks of the premises, classroom procedures, and during recruitment ensure that a strict child protection policy is in place.
A sense of achievement
Not only will kids come out of camp feeling more confident and willing to communicate in English, they’ll also be armed with a British Council attendance certificate in recognition of their hard work.
Learning that lasts
With a host of great online resources and a mobile app, learning isn’t over at the end of the course. Your child will get access to the British Council’s comprehensive set of self-study resources when camp is over.
Easy to reach
As if all of that wasn’t enough, the British Council’s Winter Study Camps take place in their centrally-located Toa Payoh branch (HDB Hub), a five-minute walk from Toa Payoh MRT (North-South Line). Sitting just off the PIE and CTE, road access is equally convenient for those with wheels.
Winter Study Camps for both Primary and Secondary students will run on 9 to 13, 16 to 20 and 23 to 27 January 2017. Head to British Council to find out more.
