Let's Talk About Art: Essay Writing

Is graffiti considered art or vandalism? Are screen print copies art? Explore the works of popular artists and develop general knowledge through discussions on visual texts and reading texts. 

Secondary students will have a chance to bring out their artistic views and present their ideas and opinions through the process of essay writing. Referencing street art and pop art, students will research, brainstorm, plan and write their essays. With peer and teacher feedback, they will be able to refine their final pieces.

By the end of the course, students will: 

  • Have developed and discussed opinions on graffiti and modern art as works of art
  • Be better able to share these opinions using modal verbs in oral and written expository texts
  • Have analysed and written a persuasive essay or a discursive essay and understand the differences between them.

Social Media and Me: Situational Writing

Can you imagine a life without social media and apps? 

In this course, Secondary students will explore how social media affects their lives and the advantages and disadvantages of technology. Through current affairs articles, videos, listening texts and digital resources like apps and blogs, students will have a chance to think critically about social media and technology. 

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 

  • Analyse a visual text to discuss their use of the internet and technology 
  • Learn appropriate and varied language to review the disadvantages and advantages of apps and other technology
  • Write and present a proposal for a language learning app

Secrets to Success: Presentation Skills 

Develop presentation skills for success in school. This course will give students the opportunity to explore and discuss the secrets to success. Based on this theme, they will learn and develop the skills to give a successful presentation.

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 

  • explore, analyse and practise language techniques for presentations
  • review and discuss what makes a successful presentation
  • learn about the effective learning strategies of grit and growth-mindsets
  • plan and give a presentation about strategies for learning English

Sweet Dreams: Narrative Writing and Comprehension

This course will use the context of Sleep and its effect on the brain. How can sleep help us learn? 

In class students will analyse a visual text on sleep and give their personal reaction to it. They will read and complete comprehension passages on Sleep and the Brain, answering language, content and overall meaning questions. This course also has two compositions. Students will brainstorm, organize and write a narrative and write an essay giving views on how technology will change how we use our brains in future. 

Summary Skills

This course focuses on helping students develop a range of strategies to synthesise texts and write effective O-Level summaries. 

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 

  • identify main ideas
  • paraphrase
  • link ideas
  • understand details of a text

Essay Writing

Students will learn and practise different sub-skills of writing to help them improve their writing performance.

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 

  • understand the demands of the question
  • write introductions and conclusions
  • develop counter paragraphs and rebuttals 
  • spot errors and make changes

Debate and Public Speaking

Students will be challenged to extend their speaking and writing skills to become more confident speakers and writers. The conclusion of the course will be a group debate competition.

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 

  • improve ‘spoken delivery’
  • plan and express personal opinion
  • understand the processes of British Parliamentary Debate
  • analyse linguistic techniques
  • structure and write a persuasive/argumentative composition

Presentation Skills - Secrets to Success
