Primary 1

This course is designed for students currently studying Primary 1. Our courses supplement learning in local schools and target areas that Singaporean learners students find most challenging.

Our Primary 1 course is designed to develop your child’s literacy and writing skills. They will become more confident readers and will learn to identify the different features of written texts and infer meanings from context. Students will learn to organise texts, use grammar accurately and produce a variety of different text types in line with the MOE syllabus

Weekly Show and Tell sessions will give your child the opportunity to grow in confidence and improve their pronunciation.

We challenge our students to think deeply and critically about themes and their own performance. We believe that this leads to better grades.

Our Primary 1 course helps your child:

  • Explore texts for early comprehension through literature based lessons
  • Experiment with MOE text types with supported writing tasks
  • Gain the confidence to speak out in communicative classrooms
  • Learn to take pride in their work by acting on peer and teacher feedback

Primary 1 Reading Development

This course is designed for students who require additional support in building their literacy skills.  

The course runs for two terms and then in the third term the learners are assimilated into the regular P1 course.

Features of the course include a thorough review of different phonic combinations and a graded reading book that can be practised at home as well as in class. Every two weeks, a new piece of authentic children’s literature is explored and then used to produce a written text in line with the P1 MOE syllabus.

How are your courses aligned to the MOE?

The learning outcomes for each class are taken from the MOE English Language Syllabus (2010). These can be seen in the student notes at the beginning of every lesson.

We target areas that Singaporean students find most challenging. Therefore we focus on comprehension and composition. Our curriculum also includes vocabulary and grammar.    

How will this course help my child in their exams?

We use authentic literature and themes to expose our students to language and ideas in more depth. This approach will have an impact on your child’s ability to read more complex texts and confidently answer more inferential level questions; their compositions will be richer both in style and content. We believe this will have a positive impact on their grasp of language and lead to better results. 

How can I help my child with their English study?

You can help strengthen and cement knowledge gained in class by regularly talking with them about the topics they are studying. You don’t need to quiz them. Just talking and adding an adult’s perspective will help develop and strengthen ideas. This will eventually help them to understand more complex texts and write better compositions. In short, you don’t have to be a teacher to have a positive impact on your child’s learning!
