About this course

This course is designed for students currently studying Primary 2. We supplement learning in local schools and target areas that we know Singaporean students find most challenging.

Our lower Primary courses are based on authentic children’s literature and provide practice in many MOE type composition, comprehension and oral type activities.

We challenge our students to think deeply and critically about themes and their own performance. We believe that this leads to better grades.

All our lower Primary courses help your child:

  • Explore texts for early comprehension through literature based lessons
  • Experiment with MOE text types with supported writing tasks
  • Gain the confidence to speak out in communicative classrooms
  • Learn to take pride in their work by acting on peer and teacher feedback

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How are your courses aligned to the MOE?

The learning outcomes for each class are taken from the MOE English Language Syllabus (2010). These can be seen in the student notes at the beginning of every lesson.

We target areas that Singaporean students find most challenging. Therefore we focus on comprehension and composition. Our curriculum also includes vocabulary and grammar.

How will this course help my child in their exams?

We use authentic literature and themes to expose our students to language and ideas in more depth. This approach will have an impact on your child’s ability to read more complex texts and confidently answer more inferential level questions; their compositions will be richer both in style and content. We believe this will have a positive impact on their grasp of language and lead to better results.

How can I help my child with their English study?

You can help strengthen and cement knowledge gained in class by regularly talking with them about the topics they are studying. You don’t need to quiz them. Just talking and adding an adult’s perspective will help develop and strengthen ideas. This will eventually help them to understand more complex texts and write better compositions. In short, you don’t have to be a teacher to have a positive impact on your child’s learning!

What is unique about studying with the British Council?

  • High calibre teachers: Our teachers are supported to develop continuously, keeping up-to-date with current educational research. In addition, all teachers are trained in current MOE guidelines in order to support students studying at Primary school.
  • A course dedicated to Singaporean needs: This course is designed and taught by teachers who understand the biggest issues that local students have.
  • An international environment: Students meet teachers and staff from across the world, exposing them to different values and opinions, broadening their mind. Not only a useful tool at school, this will prepare them for the world of further study and work, where global communication is essential.
  • Close home-school links: You will receive a welcome email from the teacher in addition to parent meetings and progress reports. We encourage you to communicate regularly with the teacher through these channels.
