Economic Development in a World in Crisis
A British Council 'Knowledge is GREAT' Lecture
Professor of Political Economy and Head of the Doctoral School
SOAS, University of London
About the Lecture:
The global economy is mired in crisis: the deepest economic collapse since the Great Depression has been followed by a ‘Great Stagnation’ with no end in sight. In rapid sequence, democracies around the world started to succumb to a wave of authoritarianism without precedent in the postwar era. This session will review the causes, severity and implications of the overlapping crises of global politics and the global economy, discuss their implications for developing countries in various regions, including Southeast Asia, and suggest strategies to support democratic and distributive economic policies.
