About this course

If you're looking for an internationally recognised qualification in teaching English as a second or foreign language, then the Cambridge CELTA is right for you. Previous English language teaching experience is not necessary to attend this course.

How is it delivered?

CELTA at British Council Singapore can be taken as a full-time intensive course (five days a week for four weeks), or a part-time course (two days a week for ten weeks). The total course length is 125 hours.   

 On the CELTA course you will: 

  • attend input sessions covering all aspects of English language teaching
  • observe experienced teachers and learn through peer observation
  • work collaboratively within a small teaching team
  • benefit from directed lesson planning and tutorial support
  • complete six hours of assessed teaching practice at a two different levels
  • get constructive feedback from experienced CELTA tutors and from your peers
  • submit four assessed assignments (750-1000 words each)

Course outline:

The CELTA Syllabus  is set by Cambridge and consists of the following learning areas:  

  • Learners and teachers, teaching and learning context
  • Language analysis and awareness
  • Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Planning and resources for different contexts
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism  

In addition, you will complete four written assignments on the following topics: 

  • Adult learners and learning contexts
  • The language system of English
  • Language skills
  • Reflection on classroom teaching  

You must also complete:

  • six hours of individual, assessed teaching practice, supported by guided lesson planning and feedback
  • six hours of observations of experienced teachers

By the end of the course you will have:

  • an internationally recognised qualification in English Language Teaching to Adults, awarded by Cambridge English (part of the University of Cambridge)
  • a solid foundation in the techniques and tools for effective planning and teaching
  • greater awareness of how to create communicative, student-centred lessons
  • greater awareness of your own teaching strengths and areas for development
  • specific ideas to help with on-going professional development

To ensure participants have the best possible chance of success, we have a multi-stage selection procedure for this course. As demand is high and places are allocated to successful applicants on a first-come-first-served basis, it is important to submit your application as early as possible. 

If you are offered a place, you need to register in good time to be able to complete your pre-course tasks. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must:

  • be at least 18 (it is generally recommended that candidates should be over the age of 20)
  • have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English, which will enable them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels (The recommended candidate language level is C2 on the CEFR)
  • have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become an effective teacher and to complete the written assignments and practice teaching successfully
  • have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry to higher education.
