Cindy Zheng is the winner of the British Council Singapore’s lucky draw in ‘myClass Chinese Social Media Campaign’. Campaign participants had to ‘retweet’ and sign up for a free placement test to earn a chance for the lucky draw, which was held from 13 to 31 August 2014. Cindy has won a myClass course package of 30 lessons (a total worth of S$1,800).
How long have you been in Singapore? What are your interests and hobbies?
I’ve been here five years. I enjoy travelling, outdoor activities, singing and reading.
What prompted you to participate in this lucky draw and take part in our placement test?
I came across my friend’s WeChat post [about the BC lucky draw]. Coincidentally, I am also relatively interested in English language activities, and so I decided to give it a go to test my level of English.
What do you hope to learn or improve from myClass lessons?
I hope to improve in my written and conversational English skills. My friend commented that after, being in Singapore for a few years, my command of both Mandarin and English seem to have worsened. Actually, my level of English has never been good, and I felt that I need to improve in this area. I also want to strengthen my written English because it is a skill that is essential and I do not wish to be teased because of my level of English.
What motivated your interest in myClass (e.g. relevant events, issues that you face in everyday life)?
myClass targets my specific weaknesses and pinpoints areas that require more guidance, and so I hope I can improve my command of the English language through this course.
What is the first thing you would like to do once you’ve completed the myClass course?
If my friends or colleagues have feedback that my command of the English language has improved, I will recommend myClass to everyone.
In your opinion, what English difficulties do foreigners in Singapore face on an everyday basis?
The fear of saying something wrongly, resulting in the lack of courage to initiate conversations. Thank you for offering me this complimentary course to learn.
