Learning outcomes

Grammar and Writing level 2

This is an intermediate level course focusing on written business communication. These course will help you be more accurate when you write at work.

This course is for adult learners who want to increase their accuracy in their written communication skills. It is suitable for people in a wide variety of jobs and covers a range of written texts.

By the end of the course you will be able to: 

  • understand the differences between the present, past and present perfect tenses
  • write questions more accurately
  • report what people say
  • use different 'if' sentences
  • distinguish between formal and informal styles
  • describe data such as graphs and pie charts
  • write emails and letters to clients and colleagues in a more concise and appropriate style
  • understand the difference between a proposal and a report.

During the course, you will have the following assessed tasks: 

  • A letter
  • Two grammar tests
  • An email.

After successfully completing this course, you can do the 'Business English Skills Speaking and Pronunciation Level 2' course and be eligible for the Business English Skills (BES) Award Level 2.

In order to get the Business English Skills Award, you must successfully complete the 'Grammar and Writing' and 'Speaking and Pronunciation' courses at the same level within a 12 month period.

Grammar and Writing level 3

This is an upper intermediate level course focusing on written business communication. This course will enable you to write more complex sentences and produce longer written texts.

This course is for adult learners who are already using English at a high level and want to focus on accuracy in more complex sentence structures. It is suitable for people in a wide variety of jobs and covers a range of written texts.

By the end of the course, you will be able to: 

  • understand the English tense system
  • differentiate between simple and continuous forms
  • use modal verbs correctly
  • write sentences with subject-verb agreement
  • write using correct formatting and organise your texts
  • write a short report and a proposal
  • take minutes during a meeting
  • write emails in different situations

During the course, you will have the following assessed tasks: 

  • An email or a letter
  • Two grammar tests
  • A short report.

After successfully completing this course, you can do the 'Business English Skills Speaking and Pronunciation Level 3' course and be eligible for the Business English Skills (BES) Award Level 3.

In order to get the Business English Skills Award, you must successfully complete the 'Grammar and Writing' and 'Speaking and Pronunciation' courses at the same level within a 12 month period.

Grammar and Writing level 4

This course focuses on written business communication. It is for adult learners who already have a sophisticated knowledge of English and want to achieve a very high level of accuracy.

This course will enable you to use complex structures and confidently write long emails and reports. It is suitable for people in a variety of jobs.

By the end of this course, you will be able to: 

  • use passives to write more formally
  • understand how different modals affect meaning
  • write in a more concise way
  • organise paragraphs appropriately
  • express complex ideas using a variety of linking words
  • write longer and more formal emails
  • draft and proof-read proposals. 

During the course, you will have the following assessed tasks: 

  • An email or a letter
  • Two grammar tests
  • A proposal or a report.

After successfully completing this course, you can do the 'Business English Skills Speaking and Pronunciation Level 4' course and be eligible for the Business English Skills (BES) Award Level 4.

Speaking and Pronunciation level 2

This is an intermediate level course focusing on spoken business communication. This course will help you speak more accurately and succinctly in different work situations.

This course is for adult learners who need to speak with improved accuracy and fluency in different business and social settings. It is suitable for people in a wide variety of jobs.

By the end of the course you will be able to: 

  • speak on the telephone with the correct tone
  • use word stress when dealing with complaints
  • negotiate using polite phrases and sentence stress
  • contribute in meetings using appropriate phrases
  • describe visual materials in presentations using pauses and signposting expressions.

During the course, you will have the following assessed tasks: 

  • Two recorded speaking activities
  • Two tests
  • A presentation on your company or a product

After successfully completing this course, you can do the 'Business English Skills Grammar and Writing Level 2' course and be eligible for the Business English Skills (BES) Award Level 2.

In order to get the Business English Skills Award, you must successfully complete the 'Grammar and Writing' and 'Speaking and Pronunciation' courses at the same level within a 12 month period.

Speaking and Pronunciation level 3

This is an upper intermediate level course focusing on spoken business communication. This course will help you speak clearly and confidently at work.

This course is for adult learners who are already using English at a high level and want to achieve a very high level of accuracy and fluency when speaking in different business and social contexts. It is suitable for people in a wide variety of jobs.

By the end of the course you will be able to:  

  • conduct long telephone conversations using stress to correct information
  • use polite word stress when dealing with clients and customers
  • accepting and declining invitations in different situations
  • using intonation to negotiate
  • give a short presentation focusing on stress and intonation to get your message across.

During the course you will have the following assessed tasks: 

  • Two recorded speaking activities
  • Two tests
  • A presentation.

After successfully completing this course, you can do the 'Business English Skills Grammar and Writing Level 3' course and be eligible for the Business English Skills (BES) Award Level 3.

In order to get the Business English Skills Award, you must successfully complete the 'Grammar and Writing' and 'Speaking and Pronunciation' courses at the same level within a 12 month period.

Speaking and Pronunciation level 4

This course focuses on spoken business communication. It is for adult learners who already have a sophisticated knowledge of English.

This course will enable you to speak clearly and confidently when giving presentations, answering questions, leading meetings and handling negotiations. It is suitable for people in a variety of jobs. 

By the end of this course, you will be able to: 

  • give presentations, make public speeches and deal with questions in a professional manner
  • use appropriate language and pronunciation to handle difficult situations
  • communicate in a culturally-aware way
  • conduct yourself with confidence in job interviews
  • lead meetings more effectively
  • negotiate effectively in a variety of situations.

During the course, you will have the following assessed tasks: 

  • Two recorded speaking activities
  • A presentation.

After successfully completing this course, you can do the 'Business English Skills Grammar and Writing Level 4' course and be eligible for the Business English Skills (BES) Award Level 4.

Focus on Pronunciation

This course is for students who wish to improve their pronunciation of English either because they have problems in certain areas or because they need to speak clearly in the public domain.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:  

  • Recognise and understand the use of phonemic symbols
  • Use the vowel sounds of English in speech
  • Use the consonant sounds of English in speech
  • Understand and use word and sentence stress
  • Speak clearly and naturally so that other people can understand you
  • Understand and use intonation patterns in speech
  • Understand and use connected speech, linking and elision
  • Use appropriate register, conventions of politeness and degrees of formality
  • Speak with greater confidence in English in front of others
  • Identify some of your errors and work at correcting them.

During the course, you will:  

  • Practise the individual sounds of English
  • Learn the phonemic symbols
  • Learn about individual word stress
  • Learn about sentence stress and its effect on meaning
  • Practise the natural rhythm of spoken English
  • Learn about intonation to express meaning and politeness
  • Practise listening to native speakers to identify meaning.

During the course, you will study:  

  • The English sound system
  • The phonemic transcription of English
  • Intonation patterns of questions, statements, commands
  • The social significance of pronunciation
  • Varieties of accents in spoken English.
