Offered at three levels, these 10-week, either 20-hour or 40-hour courses are designed specifically for Singaporean and Malaysians who wish to hone their business language skills through extensive investigation and practice to enhance their workplace communication.

Choose the most relevant course to enhance your performance by improving your speaking and pronunciation or your grammar and writing.

On these courses, you will:

How are our courses delivered?

Our team of highly qualified and experienced teachers are dedicated to supporting you throughout your learning journey and helping you to achieve the results you desire through guidance and feedback which is specific to you and your goals. Our courses can be delivered:

  • Part-time in a class size of maximum 16 students as we believe in keeping our classes small to maximise teacher-student interaction 
  • One-to-one/small group where you get to interact with your teacher more at your own pace and time at any of our four centres, at your workplace or residence in Singapore.

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERFL)

Pre-intermediate You can produce spoken and written language in familiar situations. You have a basic control of grammatical structure but your vocabulary is limited. A2 - B1  3.5 - 4.5
Elementary You can talk about interests and everyday activities and use very basic grammatical constructions. You can understand simple messages, instructions and directions. A2 - A1 2.0 - 3.5
Beginner You have very little exposure to the language. You can use and recognise common words, greetings and expressions only. You have no grammatical knowledge yet. A1  1.0

This course is for working professionals who already use English at a high level and want to focus on writing emails and meeting minutes with greater impact. It is suitable for people in a wide variety of jobs.

By the end of the course you will be able to: 

  • write e-mails and letters to clients and colleagues in a more concise and appropriate style
  • adapt emails and letters to different audiences and situations
  • distinguish between formal and informal styles
  • write different types of minutes for different meetings
  • write more effectively with correct grammar and appropriate tone
  • format and organise your texts more effectively
  • proofread and edit your written work with a high degree of accuracy.

After successfully completing this course, you can select any of the other Business English Skills (BES) modules.

Business English Skills: Speaking and pronunciation 1

This course is for working adults who already use English at a high level but want to speak with greater accuracy and fluency in different business and social contexts. It is suitable for people in a wide variety of jobs. 

By the end of the course you will be able to: 

  • tailor your message to suit the needs of your audience
  • structure and signpost your presentations to ensure your message is effectively communicated
  • describe visual materials in presentations effectively
  • use gestures and voice techniques to enhance your message
  • give credible impromptu speeches at work when needed
  • use your speeches to engage, motivate and inspire others.

After successfully completing this course, you can select any of the other Business English Skills (BES) modules.

Business English Skills: Grammar for business

This short 20-hour grammar foundation course is for students who wish to improve their accuracy when writing business communications and participating in business conversations.

By the end of the course you will be able to: 

  • identify which tense should be used for a specific function.
  • identify common grammatical errors related to business communication.
  • draft emails and other types of business communication.
  • make enquiries in a less direct manner.
  • give and respond to feedback.

Business English Skills: Better emails

Is your inbox overflowing? Are you still waiting for important information that you asked for last week? This course will help you to develop the quality and effectiveness of your emails so that you can achieve your goals at work.

  • plan and organise writing effectively
  • write and edit work to make it clear and concise.

Business English Skills: Say it clearly

This short 20-hour pronunciation course is for students who wish to improve their ability to speak English more effectively, with clearer pronunciation and greater fluency.

By the end of the course you will be able to: 

  • articulate English sounds and words correctly
  • identify the differences between similar sounds
  • understand word stress and its importance for clear communication
  • understand and use sentence stress to convey meaning more clearly
  • understand the features of connected speech 
  • vary your intonation to communicate meaning precisely.

Business English Skills: Effective communication at work (SkillsFuture credit)

This is a foundation level course, mainly aimed at Singaporean and Malaysian employees working in an office, or in a customer-fronted workplace in which clear communication is necessary. This course is ideal for customer service advisors, receptionists, technicians, retail/sales executives, helpdesk personnel, etc. who struggle to make themselves understood at work because of local dialect, or wish to improve their ability to code-switch between Singlish and English.

Course contents: 

  • 50 most common differences between Singlish and English patterns with a focus on raising awareness of differences, increasing accuracy and expanding language range
  • each unit integrates grammar, writing, pronunciation, speaking, listening practice
  • no coursebook – but handouts for each lesson, with homework self-check task, written by British Council experts with accumulated 40 years of experience in Singapore, teaching business skills to Singaporeans and Malaysians.

By the end of the course you will be able to excel in: 

  • dealing with customers
  • emails
  • presenting a product or service
  • reporting problems: when things go wrong
  • meetings
  • dealing with colleagues
  • telephoning
  • writing clear emails
  • participating effectively in meetings
