About this course

Nursery 1 (Learning Time with Shaun and Timmy)

As often a child’s first introduction to school, our Nursery 1 programme sets the foundation for a life-long love of learning and school. Children will be introduced to letters, numbers and shapes and take part in storytelling to form the beginnings of early reading and listening comprehension skills

Classes will focus on developing speaking confidence through language and kinaesthetic activities and improve fine motor skills through the use of thematically linked arts and crafts projects.

Nursery 2

In this course students will be introduced to the alphabet and learn single letter phonics through the Jolly Phonics approach. They will learn to recognise and pronounce these sounds clearly as well as write them accurately. We approach the learning of phonics and literacy skills thoughtfully and ensure that our students are challenged but not overwhelmed.

Learners will be encouraged to develop their speaking confidence through group activities and regular Show and Tell discussions. They will also develop their socialisation skills through fun games and activities that motivate them.

Nursery 2 (Learning Time with Shaun and Timmy)

We also offer an innovative approach to Early Years English learning. “Learning Time with Shaun and Timmy” is themed around the world-famous children’s film and TV characters, Shaun the Sheep and lamb of the flock Timmy.

As children progress to level two in this Nursery program, they will be introduced to single letter sounds both orally and in written form through our unique Timmy Time Phonics programme. Phonics learning is thematically linked to the lesson focus in order to give students’ context to their new sound and letter knowledge

These thematic linked lessons will also build learners’ vocabulary, creativity and critical thinking skills through class discussions, role play and interactive games.

Our Curriculum

Pre-school enrichment is a 4-year programme ranging from N1 to K2. Our ultimate objective is to prepare our learners to enter P1 as confident and creative users of English. To achieve this we focus on developing their literacy skills and building their speaking confidence. We understand that genuine learning only happens when our learners are able to grasp the meaning of the passages they are reading. Therefore, comprehension tasks play a key role in developing this integral part of the reading process.

Our Teachers

Our teachers are qualified, experienced English language practitioners who bring a caring and compassionate approach to teaching pre-school learners. In addition, we provide regular personalised feedback to parents to inform them of their child’s progress.

Course Outcomes

Our classes will give your child the speaking and literacy skills required to enter P1 with confidence. By the end of the pre-school programme we aim to have our learners reading with greater confidence and fluency

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

My child’s regular pre-school is also using Jolly Phonics. Isn’t it unnecessary to repeat the same curriculum during enrichment?

Jolly Phonics is a recognised programme for teaching phonics that is used throughout the UK. We believe that it provides the building blocks required to enable your child to recognise the sounds of English. The repetition of using the Jolly Phonics system on our enrichment programme will help your child to become more familiar with the sounds and in turn, lead to greater confidence as a reader.

Will my child be able to read after joining British Council classes?

Our range of pre-school courses will provide your child with the necessary skills to become a confident reader by the end of pre-school. These range from the learning and pronunciation of individual phonics to the application of simple reading strategies to enhance the understanding of a text.

My child has a limited understanding of English, will he/she be able to join classes?

Our pre-school courses are inclusive and we accept learners who have little grounding in English at N2 and K1 levels. The teacher monitors each child’s progress in the class and should they experience any difficulties, parents will be contacted and advised accordingly.

For a child joining K2, we conduct a short placement test to check that the learners have a sound grasp of the basic phonic units. Without a grasp of these units, it would prove challenging for them to attain any sort of fluency by the conclusion of the course.

My child finds reading difficult. How can your programme help him?

Our programme provides your child with a rich learning environment that makes reading a fun experience. Interactive activities that highlight and explore phonics are central to our lessons and ensure that your child becomes fully engaged in reading. In addition to classroom activities, your child will be given a story book to take home each week and from K2 they will also be given a guided reader to further encourage their literacy skills.

What is unique about studying with the British Council?
