Our Secondary 4 English Examination Preparation Course is designed for students in Singapore preparing for the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) English Language examination.
How is the course delivered?
The course is delivered across three teaching terms. Students first build core methods for writing and reading comprehension, then extend these skills across listening and oral communication, before applying them independently through timed examination practice, feedback and targeted correction.
What are the learning principles?
Students will:
- learn how to analyse questions, plan, develop and edit continuous and situational writing using clear organisation, appropriate tone and accurate language.
- develop independent learning habits through timed practice, self-assessment, teacher feedback and targeted redrafting.
- strengthen comprehension by responding to visual, narrative, recount and non-narrative texts at literal, inferential and evaluative levels, including questions on language use and effect.
- practise selecting, paraphrasing and organising key ideas to produce concise and accurate 80-word summaries.
- prepare for Planned Response and Spoken Interaction by organising ideas, supporting views with examples and speaking with clear pronunciation, fluency and intonation.
- improve listening comprehension by predicting content, identifying main ideas and details, recognising distractors and completing note-taking tasks accurately.
Lessons combine explicit teaching, guided practice, independent application and detailed feedback. Across the three terms, students move from learning strategies to using them under timed conditions, diagnosing why marks were lost and making precise improvements.
At the British Council, we believe strong examination performance comes from understanding the task, making deliberate choices and learning from feedback—not memorising model answers. This course equips students with the control, confidence and independence they need to perform effectively in the SEC English Language examination and communicate successfully beyond it.
