Collaborative Development Awards

Collaborative Development Awards were set up to catalyse research collaborations through new joint project development.

This was done through SE Asia-based partners visiting the UK, or UK-based partners visiting SE Asia.

Collaborative Development Awards 2013/2014

The Awards were mobility funds to cover the travel, subsistence, and accommodation for one researcher or policy maker to travel between the UK and SE Asia to a maximum value of £2000. 37 Awards were granted with geographical and sector coverage across the BIS eight great technology areas.

CDA CASE STUDY

Ben Parslew from University of Manchester visit to King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), Asian Institute of Technology and Chulalongkom University signified the success of the Collaborative Development Awards this year. The three week visit resulted in:

  • a joint project on a compliant leg mechanism for a hybrid gliding-perching robot including an academic publication on ‘Bioinspiration and Biomimetrics’.
  • successful British Council Researcher Links Workshop proposal where the technology for unmanned air vehicle mapping will be showcased. The workshop was also an ideal vehicle for discussion on collaborative research on biomechanics
  • a Visiting Academic Scholarship Award for Ben to return to KMUTT in July 2014 to continue collaborations on engineering education activity
  • development of fuel cells for application to micro air vehicles

Dr Ben Parslew commented, “This kind of thing hardly ever works, so seeing it fly is actually pretty exciting.”

Collaborative Development Awards 2014/2015

This year, a call for Collaborative Development Awards was made in Oct 2014 to support the five non-Newton countries. 20 research visits will be funded and we will share the outcomes of the visits when they are complete in March 2015.
