You can register for IELTS quickly and easily through our Online Registration Service.
To register, simply follow the steps below:
1 Read the information for candidates
Download and read the Information for Candidates which contains important information about the test format, the question types and the test results. Please note that IELTS is not recommended for candidates under the age of 16.
2 Decide which version of the test is right for you
There are two versions of the IELTS test:
- IELTS Academic
- IELTS General Training

If you are applying for a visa to move to or remain in the UK, there’s an IELTS test for you. You can find more information in our IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration section.
3 Check the IELTS test dates
There are a limited number of places for all our IELTS test sessions. To make sure you get a place, we recommend that you register two months before your chosen test date. Of course, places may be available after this date. You can check online to find up-to-date information about test dates and availability.
4 Register online, in person or by post
Register online to book your place on the test.
You will need to upload a scan of your passport or blue/pink Singapore NRIC (front and back).
Alternatively, you may complete, sign and date an Application Form and attach with it:
- a photocopy of your NRIC or passport (if you are a Singaporean)*; OR
- a photocopy of your passport (if you are not a Singaporean)*
Submit this application form to the Customer Services Centre or send it by post to Examinations Services at our Napier Road centre.
* NOTE: The identity document (NRIC or passport) must be valid at the time of registration and the same ID document must be presented on the day of the test.
You can also register in person by visiting our Napier Road centre, where our dedicated Exams Customer Services team is in operation to serve you. For exams-related enquiries, in-person registration and exam certificate collection, our operating hours are:

5 Choose your payment options
The current IELTS test fee is S$340.00 (inclusive of GST) for test dates in March, April and May 2017. For test dates that occur after 31 May 2017, the IELTS test fee will be S$355.00 (inclusive of GST).
You can pay for your test in one of the following ways:
i) Online through our online registration system
ii) With a cheque made payable to 'British Council (Singapore) Limited' if you are applying by post.
iii) In person at the British Council reception desk at our Napier Road centre during opening hours. If you want to pay in person, we accept:
- Credit card (Mastercard / VISA)
6 Complete your registration
If you are sending your application by post, please remember to include your completed application form, a photocopy of your ID and your cheque payment.
We cannot process incomplete applications, so please make sure you have sent us all the necessary information.
Copies of your results
If you would like your results to be sent to an institution or an employer, please enter the relevant addresses in the appropriate fields on the online registration form. We can issue a maximum of five free copies per student. Any additional copies cost $21 each.
7 After you register
- After registering online, you can use your profile to access the free online course: Road to IELTS.
- If you register by filling in an application form, you will receive an email with your access details.
We will send you a confirmation email 5 days before the test date, giving you the start time of your test and the venue address.

IELTS is designed to be a fair test and your English language ability will be assessed objectively, regardless of any special needs that you may have.
We can help you with any special arrangements you require for your test. For example, we offer support for people with visual impairments, hearing difficulties and dyslexia.
Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org three months in advance of your test date to find out how you can apply for special arrangements.
If you want to request a refund, please read our refund policy prior to making a request.
You can apply for a refund:
- If you cancel your registration at least five weeks before the test date, you will receive a refund of 75% of the test fee.
- If you cancel your registration within five weeks or less of the test date for any reason apart from medical ones, you will not be eligible to receive a refund.
Test day and module transfers
If you want to transfer to a different test date or change your module, you need to notify us at least five weeks prior to the test session you have registered for and pay an $80 fee. To do this, please contact us at email@example.com.
